ANNALS OF CLINICAL PSYCHIATRY is the official journal of the American Academy of Clinical Psychiatrists. The ANNALS is peer reviewed, and content is abstracted/indexed in Current Contents, MEDLINE, PsychINFO, and Psychological Abstracts.

The ANNALS publishes up-to-date information regarding the diagnosis and /or treatment of persons with mental disorders. Preferred manuscripts are those that report the results of controlled clinical trials, timely and thorough evidence-based reviews, letters to the editor, and case reports that present new appraisals of pertinent clinical topics.

Manuscript submission. Authors must submit their work electronically via the journal’s Manuscript Central Web site at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/uacp. Submit all text and tables as one Microsoft Word document when possible, and supply figures as separate files. Book review submissions and inquiries should be directed to the book editor, Dr. Richard Balon at [email protected].

Submission is a representation that the manuscript has not been published previously and is not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. A statement transferring copyright from the authors (or their employers, if they hold the copyright) to Quadrant HealthCom Inc. will be required before the manuscript can be accepted for publication. The Editor-in-Chief will supply the necessary forms for this transfer.

Title page. Provide a title page that includes the title of the article, authors’ names (with degrees), authors’ affiliations, a suggested running head, and the complete mailing address, e-mail, telephone and fax numbers of the corresponding author who is designated to review proofs. Affiliations should comprise the department, institution (usually university or company), city, and state (or nation). The suggested running head (the article’s title or an abbreviated version) should be less than 80 characters (including spaces).

Abstract. Provide a structured abstract of no more than 200 words, divided into the following sections: BACKGROUND, METHODS, RESULTS, and CONCLUSIONS. Below the abstract, provide a list of 3 to 6 key words that express the precise content of the manuscript to be used for indexing purposes.

Section headings. Sections should carry headings (such as INTRODUCTION, METHODS, RESULTS, DISCUSSION, CONCLUSIONS, ACKNOWLEDGMENTS, REFERENCES, etc.). All reports involving research with human subjects must specify in the METHODS that approval was obtained from an institutional review board and that appropriate consent was obtained from the subjects.

Case reports. Single case reports will be accepted only as “Letters to the Editor.” They can have a maximum of 500 words, 1 table, and 5 references. A report that involves 2 or more cases may be submitted as a regular article.

Financial disclosure. Grant support of any kind must be acknowledged. Include the name of the granting agency or company and grant number. Any possible conflict of interest, financial, or otherwise, related to the submitted work must be clearly indicated in the manuscript. Each author must submit a signed financial disclosure form; the Editor-in-Chief will supply the necessary forms.

Acknowledgements. Type acknowledgements (including those for grant and financial support) in 1 paragraph on a separate page that directly precedes the REFERENCES section. Authorship must be attributed only to persons who participate actively in (1) conception and design, (2) analysis and interpretation of data, and (3) drafting and revising the paper. Recognize other contributions to the work in the ACKNOWLEDGMENTS section. The Editor-in-Chief may require justification of authorship assignment.

Tables and illustrations. Number and label tables, figures, photographs, drawings, diagrams, and charts with Arabic numerals, and refer to them by those numbers in the text. Include captions for illustrations at the time of submission. Provide electronic artwork in PDF, JPEG, TIFF, or EPS format. Tables and charts can be submitted in Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint formats.

Authors are responsible for obtaining permission from the copyright holder to republish tables, charts, or other materials that have been published previously and for paying any permission fees. Authors will provide a copy of the original work and complete copies of each reprint permission letter, as well as an electronic file containing the specific wording required by the publisher for each item requiring such permission.

References. Use the appropriate Arabic numeral in parentheses on the baseline for citing references in the text. List references numerically in order of text appearance at the end of the paper (after text and before tables and figure-caption list). References must conform to the American Medical Association Manual of Style, 9th ed. Abbreviations of journal names should conform to Index Medicus style; journals not listed in Index Medicus should not be abbreviated. Use the following examples as models for the correct style and punctuation of references:

Avoid footnotes. When footnote use is absolutely necessary, number them consecutively using Arabic numerals and type them at the bottom of the page to which they refer. Place a line above the footnote, so that it is set off from the text. Use the appropriate superscript numeral for citation in the text.

Revisions. For manuscripts that are accepted for publication, authors must supply final revised files and figures to the Editor-in-chief via Manuscript Central. All files must be labeled with the Annals manuscript number (as assigned by Manuscript Central) and the first author’s last name. Corresponding authors will be responsible for reviewing and approving the final PDF proof of the article, which will be sent via e-mail.

Each corresponding author will receive 1 copy of the issue in which the article appears. Reprints of individual articles are available for order at the time authors review page proofs. A discount on additional issues is available to authors who order before print publication.

Clinical Research Award. All original published papers are considered for the American Academy of Clinical Psychiatrists George Winokur Clinical Research Award. Winners are selected annually from papers published during the calendar year. The awards are given at the next annual Academy meeting and include a cash prize, engraved plaque, and reimbursement for reasonable expenses to attend the meeting. Judging is conducted by the Academy’s Research Award Committee, and all decisions of the judges are final.
